January Mantel - Show and Tell Friday

Pin It Now!

Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!  I can't believe we are already getting towards the end of January!  Soon I will be decorating my mantel for Valentine's Day, which probably won't be too much different than I did last year.

It seems in January I always use silver, crystal and white to decorate and that's what I did again this year...with lots of candles!

I'm loving this time of year now that I have a fireplace! It doesn't get that cold in California so I have been pretty much using the fireplace for heat in the evening. I think I've only turned my heater on a couple times.

It's so cozy to sit here with the fire and the candles and a glass of wine...except I decided to do a dry January this year so no wine for me... no alcohol at all this month.  I haven't been perfect though...I had some wine a couple times but since I was drinking wine almost every evening it's a huge improvement. I've decided I'm going to continue it like this from now on...even past January! I find I get more done when I don't pour myself a glass of wine when I get home from work! I've replaced the wine with sparkling flavored water in a wine glass!

Reminiscing - Show and Tell Friday

Pin It Now!

Hi and Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!

I have nothing new to share this week but I've been very much reminiscing about my old apartment.  My lease just came up at the apartment my daughter and I have been living at for the past two years (I cannot believe it's been two years already) and I would love to move but the rent prices in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area have just skyrocketed over the last 2 years.  That was the reason I had to leave the last place because my landlord knew she could get a lot more $$ for it!

I looked for another place but I can't afford anything out there now! I can barely afford what I have.  To make ends meet I've started driving for Uber as a second job. It's great because I can set my own schedule and drive when I want to!  I've only been doing it less than a week but I can see that extra income is going to help!

...anyway, I came across some old photos of my old place so I thought I would share some of my favorites this week (as I shed a tear)....

The sad part is when lived here I really didn't appreciate it as much as I should have. I thought it was old (in a 1960s old way, not a nice vintage old way)! Now I look back and realize what I had is sooo much better than what we have now! sigh...

******

I was sooo happy when my landlord finally put in laminate floors after talking about doing it for years...

Oh and my little patio...how I miss you so!

Thanks for allowing me to reminisce!  At least because of blogging I have so many photos of this place and I can reminisce any time I want!  I know someday I'll be back in a cute little place, probably even better than this one!

Snowflake Cookies - Show and Tell Friday

Pin It Now!

Hi all! Welecome to Show and Tell Friday!

I didn't know what to share this week and then I found these photos on my iPhone from Christmas.

I made these snowflake cookies during the holidays but since they are more "wintery" than "Christmasy" I thought I would share them.  I make these same cookies about every-other year.

I think this year I will even make some heart cookies with this recipe for Valentines Day.  I made heart cookies way back in 2007 and shared them here.

Here is the recipe I use for the cookies: No Fail Sugar Cookies and for the icing I use the third recipe (Lesley's Royal Icing) here: Three Recipes for Royal Icing.  I found that website for the recipes years ago when I was looking for some cookie cutters. They have a huge selection.

After I decorated some of them I gently dipped them in some coarse crystal sugar that I bought at a cake decorating store.  It really gave them the finishing touch!

I also made some Mexican Wedding Cake Cookies to look like snowballs!

Pita Pizza - Show and Tell Friday

Pin It Now!

Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!

I can't remember if I've shared this recipe before or not but I made it Thursday night so I thought I would snap some photos of the process.

I started making this about 3 years ago when I lost a ton of weight.  I think I made it about once a week back then.  I've gained some of that weight back (luckily not all of it) so I decided to start eating some of the things I did back then and this is one of my favorites.

Yep...one of my New Year's resolutions is to lose weight!

Now I use Pocket Thins, they are only 3 Weight Watchers points!  (Oh by the way, I'm NOT getting paid to promote any of these products).
Instead of pizza sauce I use 1 wedge of Laughing Cow Cheese (only 35 calories a wedge), which I spread on the Pocket Thin....

On top of the Laughing Cow cheese I pile on a bunch of fresh spinach...

Tonight I sauteed some onions and added those. In the past I've used red onions or green onions.

I usually don't add cheddar cheese but tonight I did.  That's the great thing about these...you can add anything that sounds good...

I added a little reduced-fat feta cheese (blue cheese is good too), some roasted red peppers (love these!) and some grape tomatoes...

This is one of my favorite things to add to so many dishes...it's Gourmet Garden basil paste which is available in the produce section of the grocery store. I just squirt a little on here and there. It has the flavor of pesto without all the oil...

Now it's ready to go in the oven...

I bake it in a 375 degree preheated oven, directly on the rack with a cookie sheet on the rack below to catch anything that falls off.  Bake it until it's heated through and the cheese melts...about 15 minutes or so...

Slice and enjoy! It has so much flavor!

Glittered seashells - Show and Tell Friday

Pin It Now!

Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!

Unfortunately I have some sad news to share.  As many of you know I have been taking care of my ex-husband since he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last August.  I told him he was welcome to stay with us until he was not well enough to stay home alone and then we would have to put him in a nursing home.

Last week that time came...actually it came the Tuesday before Thanksgiving when he fell getting out of bed. I started looking for a nursing home at that time but there wasn't any available around here! Actually I wasn't looking...our wonderful hospice social worker, Brian did all the work!  Finally after a week he was able to find a place and Joe was taken to the nursing home on Friday, Dec 4th.

I would have let him stay here but I have to go to work and after 3 falls it was time that he needed more care than I could give him.  He seemed to be doing really well there and then last Tuesday (Dec 8th), only after being there 4 days and a day after our daughter Lauren's 23 birthday he took a turn for the worse and passed away that evening.  I knew that day was coming but I didn't think it would happen that suddenly.

We were there at his bedside along with other family and friends. My daughter held his hand as he passed away peacefully.

He had told me a couple weeks before this that he wanted to make it until Lauren's birthday. I really thought he would make it until after the holidays so I think he must have known it was getting close.

I'm thankful that he made it past her birthday because I think that would be really hard if it had happened on that day. It's been hard for Lauren but she's doing much better now and each day gets a little easier.  Sorry for the bad news but since I shared his illness with you all earlier I wanted to let you all know.

I posted a sweepstakes last week and luckily I submitted that post way before Thanksgiving and although the timing wasn't great it was easy enough to just post it when they told me.

Now on to Show and Tell Friday...

A few weeks ago I started glittering some seashells. I took pics of the process and then I accidentally deleted them from the camera!  I just watered down some white glue with a little water and brushed it on the seashell and sprinkled it with glitter.  I used lots of different colors and then I blended some colors together to make my own glitter colors.

I wish the sparkle showed up in photos but it doesn't!  The photos don't do them justice.

I put them in my tiered dish and put that in my bedroom.  I usually keep this tiered dish on my dining room table but I did something different there this year.  I'll share that next week!

I also added some strands of pearls and some ornaments that I made using clear bulbs that I dropped watered-down white glue in and then glitter and swirled around to coat the inside of the bulb.  They came out so beautiful!  I also deleted the photos of that tutorial by mistake!
